Five students have died by suicide in Kota in just a month. Parents say students are not being counselled properly to deal with stress caused by the competitive environment.
Five students died by suicide in just a month in Kota, a city in Rajasthan famous for its coaching institutes and now increasingly for student suicides. The relatives of the students have no idea why their wards took the drastic step or what caused the mental health breakdown that ended so tragically.
The five student suicides took place between May 9 and May 27. Parents of the students told India Today that students are not being properly counselled to deal with stress caused by the competitive environment where every student is expected to make it and struggle with the task.
The latest case of suicide involved a student from Rajasthan who hanged herself. She was taking coaching classes for NEET. Two days before her, a student from Bihar also hanged himself from the ceiling fan in his hostel room.

The mother of the boy said no action was taken by the district administration. The hostel where he lived did not even take her calls. Even when they did come online, she drew a blank about her son’s whereabouts as the hostel administration would not give her any information.
Aspirants from across the country come to Kota to prepare for engineering and medical entrance tests. Hundreds of hostels have mushroomed in this town where they live to attend coaching classes.
